Home providers

Home providers are an important option for many families. Many times there is a cost benefit, but home providers also allow children to interact with a wider age group of children. This is an important socialization consideration as the children can develop at the same time as they interact with both older and younger children. Many home providers are referred to as sitters, but a home program can be as involved and structured as a center-based program. These providers are hardly sitters. Look for a program that meets your needs and expectations.

You should have the same expectations as center-based care. Your home provider should have adequate amounts of working toys that are age appropriate for the children. The provider should have meals that are consistent with USDA guidelines, and the provider should follow the same child to provider ratios determined by licensing standards.

The State of Illinois has a rating system to assist parents in the selection process of a child care center, not only are centers participating in the program, but home providers can also participate earning a rating that indicates the quality of care the facility provides.  A QRS star rated facility has passed a rigourous examination of the facilities, equipment, program, and financial well being. Information about inccrra and the Quality Rating system can be found at http://www.inccrra.org/quality-rating-system.
